Face Frame Cabinets

These cabinets incorporate a solid wood frame that is attached to the front edges of the cabinet cases. Hinges mount to this face frame and there is usually a wide gap between cabinet doors and drawer fronts, which makes the face frame a visible part of the cabinet bank. The amount of overlay will vary depending on the hinge and plate pairing used.

Full overlay

Covers up to 3/4" of the face frame and gives cabinets a streamlined "Euro" box look. Typically yields a 1/4" ~ 3/8" gap between cabinet doors.

Half overlay

Covers up to 1/4" of the face frame. A more traditional setup that typically yields a 1-3/4" ~ 2" gap between doors depending on the face frame stile width used.

Frameless / Euro Style Cabinets

A 4-sided box made from 3/4" material with hinges and plates that mount to the cabinet interior. No face frame is used on these cabinets and there is often little gap between cabinet doors.

Full overlay

These pairings set the door to cover nearly all of the front edge of the cabinet. Commonly referred to as a "Euro style" hinge.

Inset

These pairings set the doors to fit entirely within the cabinet opening so they sit flush with the cabinet sides.
